Picking the best dishes of the year isn’t as difficult a task as you might think. Certain meals just stand out in my mind, usually surrounded by a golden halo of sense memory that makes my eyes sparkle and my mouth water just a little.
When Chef Michael Siegel set out to make the menu for Sonoma’s Mint and Liberty Modern Diner, his question was, “If I was at a diner in Louisiana, what would be on the menu?”
Sonoma just got a new modern, all-day diner with Mint and Liberty, which comes from the same owners as Sonoma’s Sunflower Caffe.
They're offering a modern twist on a classic diner with a wonderfully talented chef at the helm, Michal Siegel . His menu features regional American dishes, from northern ones like loaded baked potato pierogi to braised Rancho Gordo scarlet runner beans with smoked mushrooms and kale (you can get them with or without bacon), while southern dishes include shrimp gumbo and BBQ baby back pork ribs.
"Why Mint and Liberty?” “These are the things we stand for, Mint is for Freshness Farm to Table Ingredients; Liberty is Freedom of Choice, you can come in and have a sprouted lentil salad or have pork belly and kimchi on top of your hamburger."
“Mint and Liberty, the “modern diner” going in where the Breakaway Café was for years, will open to the public next Wednesday, Nov. 7.”
“Mila’s family owned the Copper Penny for several years [as well as] Baskin Robbins and IHOP franchises where she worked with the family.”
“Fans of Shorty’s pastrami can now rejoice: It is coming back, but the commute will be much longer.”
